Size of coverage area.

For large open spaces, a higher-capacity air purifier is generally your best choice. This can be more cost-effective and convenient than trying to cover the same amount of space with smaller units.

Less expensive, compact models are available for small spaces, saving you money while still effectively covering the area. However, if you have special requirements in a small space (such as cigarette smoke or mold), you may still need a higher-capacity air purifier with multiple technologies for specific types of pollutants (See Buying Guide based on "Pollutants Removed").

Maintenance.

Replacement filters/costs.

Air purifiers without replacement filters, or replacement costs of any kind, ensure a low cost of ownership. In other words, your upfront cost is your final cost. However, Surround Air's Multi-Tech air purifiers offer very affordable replacement costs, which are necessary for the vital functions provided. For example, the HEPA is the most effective type of filter available against dust and other allergens, but most HEPAs must be periodically replaced, unless it is a permanent HEPA.

Sensor Technology.

A few air purifiers actually measure the amount of pollutants in the air, along with the types of pollutants present. Some air purifiers can also conduct its own diagnostics, letting you know when filters need to be replaced, or when maintenance is needed.

This additional information can be helpful, but comes at a higher price.

Sound level.

Some of the most effective air purifiers are also very loud. This defeats the purpose of the air purifier, since most people will avoid operating it, or will operate it only on the lowest settings.
